Building Men

Did a little searching and found a website for Joe Ehrmann called "Building Men for Others".

Building Men for Others (BMO) was created out of an awareness that one of the greatest crises in America centers on the issue of masculinity and its correlating themes of boyhood, manhood, husbandry and fatherhood.

BMO will assist boys, men, parents, families, schools, communities, sports programs, coaches, religious institutions and anyone desirous of helping young boys and damaged men become whole and healthy men.

Braveheart Speech

Recently my oldest son took an acting class and had to put together a monologue in a day. After exploring a few options we decided to use the inspirational speech from Braveheart. To make it a little longer we took some parts from other speeches in the movie and put them all together.

It came out great and he did a great job with it. Thought I would share it just for fun.

He Turns Boys Into Men

Joe Ehrmann, a former NFL star, is now a volunteer coach for a high school football team, but his real purpose for being on the field is to totally redefine what it means to be a man.

In this Parade Magazine article, Jeffrey Marx discusses Mr. Ehrmann's view on the “three lies of false masculinity”: athletic ability, sexual conquest and economic success; as well as gives a quick yet inspiring window into Mr. Ehrmann's technique to instill “strategic masculinity” into his players.

Inpirational Quotes on Manhood

Adversity toughens manhood, and the characteristic of the good or the great man is not that he has been exempt from the evils of life, but that he has surmounted them. - Patrick Henry

Fathers are to sons what blacksmiths are to swords. It is the job of the blacksmith not only to make a sword but also to maintain its edge of sharpness. It is the job of the father to keep his son sharp and save him from the dullness of foolishness. He gives his son that sharp edge through discipline. - Steve Farrar

That’s what fathering is all about. It’s mentoring and equipping your son to become a man who will assume the family leadership for the next generation. You have no higher calling in life. It is your God-given assignment - Steve Farrar

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer too much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. - Teddy Roosevelt

No man has ever risen to the stature of spiritual manhood until he has found that it is finer to serve somebody else than it is to serve himself. - Woodrow Wilson

If a man does not have an ideal and try to live up to it, then he becomes a mean, base and sordid creature, no matter how successful. - Teddy Roosevelt

The common-minded man always calls the man who thinks of righteousness before gain, who seeks to do the will of God and does not seek to make a fortune, unpractical. He WILL not see that the very essence of the practical lies in doing the right thing. - George McDonald

There's nothing that can help you understand your beliefs more than trying to explain them to an inquisitive child. - Frank A. Clark

In Giving, a man receives more than he gives; and the more is in proportion to the worth of the thing given. - George McDonald

Family Mission Statement

Does your family have a brief, well-thought-out document describing the basic principals and goals for your family? Does everyone from parents to the smallest children know clearly "what we stand for, and what we’re dedicated to doing"?

If you have never gone through the exercise of formulating a Family Mission Statement, it is something I would highly recommend. It is the husband/dad's responsibility as the leader to make this happen!

There are lots of resources out there on how to make this a fun, learning, bonding, experience. Give this site a try for a quick start:

The Marks of Maturity for Manhood

When does a boy become a man? The answer to this must go far beyond biology and chronological age. As defined in the Bible, manhood is a functional reality, demonstrated in a man's fulfillment of responsibility and leadership.

This article suggest thirteen marks of maturity for biblical manhood. The achievement of these vital qualities marks the emergence of a man who will demonstrate true biblical masculinity.

The article is written by R. Albert Mohler, Jr. who is president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Age of Opportunity

Targeted for parents of teenagers, but with advice and techniques applicable to any age, Mr Tripp counters the culturally instilled belief that the teenage years are simply a time "to survive". Quite to the contrary, these are years to dig in and seize the opportunities to deepen communication, learn, and grow with our teens.

Mr. Tripp sets the stage by explaining the simple fact that "our communication problems with our teenagers exist not simply because or our child's character, but because of our idolatry" as parents...things like comfort, respect, control that prevent us from taking the time to deal with the heart issues. He then gives a high level view of what a Biblical family is and what the objectives are before launching into the meaty middle of the book.

He reveals five key goals for raising teenagers. These goals touch on all of the "typical" teen issues including the very real spiritual struggle going on, developing a personal relationship with God apart from their parents, dealing with the overwhelming influence of culture, and preparing them to leave home. He ends the book with practical tips and techniques to help apply the principles. Also included is a study guide for parents and/or groups to work through.

What's a Motto For You?

A motto is a short expression of a guiding principle. Most mottoes are statements of faith or advice, which are serious in nature. Others are humorous thoughts to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously

This site lists mottoes from various sources. Most are in Latin, but several are in other languages. If the motto is not in English, the English translation for it is listed beside the motto.

Updated to point to another post with the captured list:

Badge Clubs

Badge clubs are structured youth programs designed for character development and strengthening of the relationship between parent and child. While different clubs may have different areas of focus (for example: evangelism, civic responsibility, nature appreciation, etc) all share the common aspects of regular meetings, focused activities, passage ceremonies, and collected symbols of advancement, ie. badges.

While these can never substitute for the organic mentoring relationship the Bible calls us to have with our children as their earthly fathers, these can definitely supplement what we are already doing by giving us a structured environment, a sense of community, and a systematic approach to advancement….not to mention standardized symbols

Here are links to some of the most common clubs:

Training Ground

To become a man, there is a journey you must take. You cannot buy it. You cannot earn it. No woman can offer it. A degree doesn't promise it. It can't be found at the mall. Not even your friends can take you there.

This is the heart of a summer training program of "Work, Wilderness, & Worship" for young men based in Colorado Springs, CO. This looks to be based on Wild at Heart concepts and seems very interesting. Check it out at:

Knighthood = Manhood? An Alternate View

It is important to consider alternate views in the Christian community. This author shares his concerns about drawing parallels between Biblical Manhood and Knighthood. Although the author of this blog does not agree with his conclusions, it is important to consider all viewpoints.

In the author's words:

“The only goal a Christian needs is to be focused on the things of Christ and to become more like Him. Being caught up in rituals and ceremonies and being concerned with what others perceive as a landmark sign of maturity shows a lack of Biblical maturity and understanding.”

"IF" -- an inspirational poem by Rudyard Kipling

IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

--Rudyard Kipling

Wild at Heart

In the continuing parade of books from Christian authors for men comes a book that has taken the evangelical community by storm. Counselor and writer John Eldredge claims that men are wild at heart and desperately need to recapture this essential part of maleness. In his book, Wild at Heart, Eldredge claims that every man needs a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue.

This book has caused no end to controversy in Men's Ministries throughout the country, so when reading Wild at Heart, one needs to be aware that Eldredge's language is sometimes imprecise and can be misinterpreted as an excuse for men to overindulge in risky behavior and some men to take dangerous risks they are not prepared for.

Overall I loved this book and it inspired me greatly. Check it out for yourself!

Raising a Modern Day Knight

What does it mean to be a man? Moreover, how does a father instill these qualities in his son? By Raising a Modern-Day Knight. Beginning with a biblical perspective of manhood, author-pastor Robert Lewis shares a unique approach to shaping a boy into a man by equipping him with three essential elements.

This is the book that started it all for me, and one that I return to time and time again for inspiration. If you could only read one book on the subject of modern manhood, preparing sons, leaving a legacy, rites of passage, etc. this is the one I would recommend.

How To Share Your Life Story Effectively

It should be our desire to present Christ in such a clear, simple and attractive way that people we share with will not only want to know Him, but they will also know how to know Him personally….

A carefully and intelligently worded testimony will communicate far more effectively than a prolonged one that includes a lot of extraneous material which will distract from, rather than emphasize, the point of personal commitment to Christ and what this can mean in a person’s life.

This document contains some thoughts and guidelines to help you prepare a simple and effective three-minute testimony that can be shared in a wide-variety of situations.
